God, You Are Beautiful.
One thing have I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after;
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to inquire in his temple. Psalm 27:4 (ESV)
Moses talked to God, but he never saw His face.
“Please show me your glory,” pleaded the man who led the Israelites out of Egypt. “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD,’” replied the Almighty. “But you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” God did allow Moses to see His back as He passed by. (taken from Exodus 33:18-23, ESV)
Then how can I be certain that God is beautiful? Because I can see the wonders He has made. Paul puts it this way:
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:20 (ESV)
Look up. Look around. The beauty of God’s handiwork surrounds us. The seasonal kaleidoscope: Violet winter, pale green spring, golden summer, orange autumn. The intricate net of a spider’s web. The velvet whorls of a rose. The grace of a hawk riding the wind. The sapphire of Caribbean waters.
Father, Your Beauty overwhelms me. I cannot behold Your creation without hearing Your whispering, “I made this.” I praise You for Your perfection and thank You for giving me a glimpse of Your majesty. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
