How sweet is autumn,
How warm the glow of October.
Spring makes the promise
That summer fulfills,
And winter puts the land to sleep.
But first, autumn,
The glorious in-between,
Calls out loud and deep
”Watch me burn.”
Yellow, orange, and red
Consume the green,
And I watch the forest turn
Into a living fire.
Then the blaze dies out,
Leaf by leaf,
Crumbling under my feet
As winter waits.
